Looking to find a trick for adding hyperlinks in your next text message? Well, we have some bad news. You can’t technically put a hyperlink into a text message. But don’t stop reading just yet, because you can add a link within almost any text or SMS message. No, that’s not as confusing as it sounds!
If you’re feeling a little befuddled on the difference between links and hyperlinks, you’re not alone. We’ll quickly explain the difference between the two, show you how easy texting links can be, and provide examples of how including links can serve your business goals.
What’s The Difference Between Links and Hyperlinks?
While links and hyperlinks both direct you to a webpage when clicked, the difference is in how the link is presented.
A hyperlink is a link that’s activated by clicking on a specific highlighted word or phrase. A regular link is simply the entire URL, not embedded in any text. To give you an example, here’s a link out to our Ultimate SMS Marketing Guide presented two ways:
Hyperlink: | Link: |

💡SimpleTexting Tip: When you want to text a link to your subscribers, our URL shortener will turn a long web address (like the example above) into a condensed link like this: http://txt.tf/BSIUBR
How to Add Links in Text Messages
To include a link in any text message, just type or paste the full URL into your message. Most messaging platforms will automatically turn the URL into a link that allows recipients of the message to click and access the linked page or content. You can also use a URL shortener to reduce the length of a URL to include in your message.
For the SimpleTexting text marketing platform, including short URL links in your campaign is as easy as copying & pasting your desired link, then pressing our magic “Shorten URLs” button! Not only does this tool save you valuable characters, but it converts your link into a tracking tool accessible from your analytics dashboard. Here’s what we mean.
Let’s pretend you’re a University looking to collect orientation feedback from students, and you want to text out a survey.
You’d begin by typing out your message as normal. But when you paste your link, you’ll want to click the “Shorten URL” button above the text.
From your end, the message will still show as a full link, but your subscribers will receive this:
Texting out links is that easy!
How to Track Link Click Through Rate (CTR)
The fun with links doesn’t stop there! Once you text out a shortened URL, you can track your message in real-time to see who has clicked through.
To find your CTR, click on “Analytics” from the side menu. Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and find your campaign.
You’ll be presented with lots of information including how many messages were sent, delivered, opened, as well as how many people responded to your campaign or unsubscribed. To view your CTR, you’ll want to scroll all the way to the right until you see “Clicked” and “CTR”
Now, not only do you know your campaigns CTR, but you can also contextualize your data based on the size of your list by seeing how many people actually clicked to give you that specific CTR.
In addition to collecting your data, you can take further action such as segmenting your list based on clicks, and sending follow up messages based on that behavior!
