Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut runs “Liquid Sundays” every Sunday through the summer. The idea is to bring a Vegas-style pool party to Connecticut, complete with a DJ, obnoxiously Instagram-able floaties, and buckets of cocktails (no, seriously, a bucket full of booze…the bartender laughed at me when I asked her if it was “just for one person” or if I was “supposed to share it.” The answer is…it’s just for you. Vegas-style pool party-goers don’t share their buckets of booze.)

Foxwoods Resort Casino features deluxe accommodations, fine dining, a wide variety of entertainment attractions and shopping. Foxwoods Liquid Sundays is the only outdoor Vegas-style pool party in the Northeast, happening every Sunday throughout the summer.

I was invited to the bash by Pepsi, who was there to celebrate World Emoji Day. Pepsi recently launched bottles with their own unique take on emojis. There are over 600 proprietary designs so it made sense that they were going to join in on the World Emoji Day fun.

As part of the day, Pepsi had a Plinko-style game you could play to win some fun swag from sunglasses to beach towels to magic show tickets at the casino. I’m not going to lie, I grew up watching the Price is Right and climbing up to that Plinko-style board was seriously full-filling some childhood daydreams. If you never yelled “$2.45! $2.45!” at the T.V. while home sick from school, then you didn’t do childhood right.

And, it turned out all my Price is Right studying did me well because I won the biggest prize! You can see how excited I was below (pure bliss.)

I don’t know about you, but typically I reserve Sundays for relaxing and mentally preparing for Monday (womp.womp.) But, I loved going out of my Sunday comfort zone with a Sunday afternoon pool party! I boogied to the DJ, dipped into the pool, drank booze from a BUCKET, and pretended that I didn’t have to be a grown up the next morning.

Waste Management teamed up with Foxwoods Resort Casino’s Vice President of Hotel Operations, Christopher O’Connell, and Food and Beverage Director Jason Morgan to implement its first-ever waste reduction and recycling initiative at Foxwoods’ Liquid Sundays.

Liquid Sundays is a weekly pool party at Fox Tower that is held throughout the summer attracting approximately 550 guests each week. As a Waste Management Total Recycle Program (TRP) customer, O’Connell identified this opportunity to proactively reduce waste to TRP Manager Michelle Lee Guiney. Due to the nature of the environment, no recycling program was in place, and with all food and beverages served on disposable products, Guiney saw ample opportunity to kick off an effective sustainability initiative.

Guiney worked with Morgan on the scope of the event. Since Morgan expressed an interest in zero waste as a long-term goal, they established both waste reduction and recycling as top priorities. Recycling bins were paired with waste bins throughout public areas and service bars, with a plan for servicing and maintaining the recycling bins both during and after the event.

For waste reduction, Waste Management reusable cups were introduced and posters on display encouraged guests to go “straw-less,” although compostable straws were made available. Educational signage was also posted informing guests about this new waste reduction initiative.

Guiney worked with Waste Management Account Manager Tom Henry who was instrumental in setting up and distributing giveaways to guests during the event. Foxwoods’ team were exceptionally responsive and expressed great support. “I am glad we’ve started recycling at the pool – its long overdue. We are working together and will eventually get to 100 percent zero waste as things fall in place,” explains Morgan.

It is a great initial effort toward achieving zero waste, and Waste Management thanks Foxwoods Resort Casino for the opportunity to support its sustainability mission.
